It provides basic real-time malicious threat protection for single individuals operating individual computers. By contrast, McAfee sells four complete antivirus software packages. All except the basic package are designed to protect multiple devices running multiple operating systems. Each McAfee package comprises a wide range of malware blocking and privacy protection components, including a virtual private network (VPN) and identity theft monitoring. If you own only a single PC, Windows Defender is a money-saving basic antivirus option. If you own multiple devices and want both threat and privacy protections, paid antivirus software from McAfee or another vendor is recommended. Mcafee Internet Security Review Offline Scans AndWindows Defender Pros and Cons Pros: Free real-time protection from viruses, malware, spyware Activates automatically if no other antivirus solution is detected Windows Defender Offline scans and reboots PC to eliminate persistent malware Includes a firewall and Find My Device to locate, lock, or erase a Windows 10 PC Cons: Protects only a single Windows 10 device Offers only real-time malicious threat protection and on-demand scanning No added protections against email spam or phishing No online privacy protections, such as a VPN, password manager, or identity theft protection Microsoft provides pre-installed malware protections in Windows 10 that are activated by default if your system detects no other protections. Without having to do or pay anything, youll be protected against a variety of real-time malware threats including viruses, spyware, worms, and ransomware. Windows Defender is part of Windows 10 and included as part of Windows Security Center, which helps Windows users monitor and control how their computer operates. Windows Security Center includes Windows Defenders protections for viruses and other threats, as well as account, firewall, network, and device protections. It also has app and browser controls, information on your computers performance, and family options including parental controls. However, Windows Defender is designed to guard only against basic real-time malicious threats. It doesnt offer the more expansive protections provided by McAfee and other paid antivirus software vendors, such an anti-spam and anti-phishing protection, a password manager, webcam protection, a VPN, or identity theft protection. Plus, Microsoft doesnt offer customer support for Windows Defender. Windows Defender and McAfee serve two completely different sets of users. If youre a solo Windows 10 computer user and youre careful about your online activities such as not connecting to the internet via unprotected open Wi-Fi networks, clicking on unknown links, or opening or downloading unknown files Windows Defender should suffice. However, if your household contains multiple users and devices, McAfee or another paid antivirus subscription is a better choice. All of McAfees four tiers of antivirus software even the basic Total Protection Single Device plan for one user (29.99 for the first year, 79.99 upon renewal) include a VPN if you activate auto-renew on your subscription. All McAfee packages also include real-time malicious threat protection, a password manager, safe web browsing technology, high-level file encryption, and McAfee Shredder to permanently delete files so they cant be recovered. The McAfee Total Protection Individual and Couples, Total Protection Family, and LiveSafe plans include identity theft protections such as dark web monitoring, Social Security Number tracing, and 247 customer service if you think your identity was stolen. The Family Plan covers 10 devices and adds parental controls. McAfee LiveSafe covers an unlimited number of devices and multiple operating systems.
